Irish open title defence

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish senior football team opened defence of its Niagara Catholic Athletic Association title Friday with a 43-3 victory over the visiting Denis Morris Reds.
Notre Dame got off to a bit of a sluggish start in the game before it began to hit on all cylinders.
“We have been undisciplined,” Irish head coach Tim Bisci said. “We played Huron Heights, No. 1 in Canada, and we had a sequence where we caused a fumble on our two-yard line and ran it back for a touchdown and we got a penalty. We march it down and we score and we get another penalty.

Battaglini the Badger

Cassie Battaglini figured the grass wasn’t going to be necessarily greener on the other side of the border.
The Welland native did some research into playing soccer in the States but realized home was where the heart was.
“I have always wanted to stay home, I never wanted to go away and Brock has a program (kinesiology) and that was an offer I couldn’t resist,” the Notre Dame graduate said. “They also have a new coach (Carli Tingstad) and a lot of awesome girls. So at the tryouts with the atmosphere I knew it was a really good spot to be. There is nowhere else I would rather go.

Irish ready to take on all challengers

Braydon Snider has a simple message for teams looking to dethrone the Notre Dame Fighting Irish senior football team from its perch as two-time Niagara Bowl champions.
“You can try but we ain’t going down easy,” the 6-foot-1, 250-pound defensive tackle/nose tackle said.
The 12B student says there is no secret to Notre Dame’s football prowess.
“We have good heart and that always keeps us going. We are good as a unit and that is how we always win.”

New NCAA sports convenor up to the challenge

The newest convenor of the Niagara Catholic Athletic Association and Niagara Catholic District School Board kindergarten to Grade 12 health and physical education consultant brings a lengthy and varied sports resume to the role.
Jennifer Benoit, a 43-year-old Welland native, played all sports growing up in elementary school at St. Kevin’s and at high school at Notre Dame.
