Sophia Saldutto made a triumphant debut in more ways than one at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations track and field meet in Ottawa earlier this month.
The 17-year-old, Grade 12 student at Notre Dame earned a bronze medal in the senior girls discus and also placed fourth in the javelin.
Normally, those accomplishments are noteworthy on their own, but they become even more impressive considering it was Saldutto’s first time at OFSAA.

Julia Tremeer was a double winner at the Niagara Catholic Athletic Association Zone 2 track and field meet Wednesday at the Niagara Olympic Club.
The 15-year-old Grade 10 student at Notre Dame placed first in the junior girls 800 and 1,500-metre races, which was her goal coming into the day.
“I won them both last year as well so I was looking to post good times so I can get into the faster heats at SOSSA (Southern Ontario Secondary Schools Association) and continue to get my times faster,” the Pelham resident said.
