Knights too much for Fighting Irish

“I enjoy these type of challenges. It’s going to get me better, it’s going to get the team better,” Benko said Friday morning after the Notre Dame Fighting Irish dropped a 78-54 decision to the Notre Dame Knights of Brampton to kick off the 47th All Ontario Catholic Classic Basketball Tournament. “That’s all we want is to get better as basketball players.”

Fighting Irish set to take on Marauders

bpsportsniagara NDCS 01102023Andrew Benko was determined to not let history repeat itself.

After being upset in the quarter-finals of last year’s tournament, the 17-year-old, Grade 12 guard for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish took matters into his own hands to make sure his team would live another day.

Benko poured in 19 points to lead the Irish past the Holy Cross Raiders 72-42 in a championship round quarter-final game Thursday at the 67th Annual Welland Tribune Basketball Tournament.

FIGHTING IRISH 84 BLUE BEARS 25

bpsportsniagara NDCS 01102023Nineteen points from Andrew Benko powered the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to an 84-25 victory over the Port Colborne Blue Bears in Round 1 Tribune action at Notre Dame.

Also scoring for the Irish were Trent Groulx 17, William Benko 13, Nicholas Cappreta 9, Michael Ventresca 6, David Babalola 4, Tyler Ray 4, DiGioia 4, Colton Kizlyk 3, Benric Lanzar 3 and Devon Devost 2.

Scoring for Port Colborne were Ethan Yalowica 10, Jake Graham 7, Kolby Kulak 6 and Ahmed Shazad 2.

Mountainview Building Group players of the game were Groulx and Yalowica.

Sixteen teams vying for Tribune title

bpsportsniagara 01042024 ndcsA hardcourt tradition will continue next week in Niagara with the staging of the 67th Annual Welland Tribune Basketball Tournament.

The tournament was first held in 1955 and has been played every year since then with the exception of 2021 and 2022 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
